The Link
The Bell-CHSH program constructs dichotomic observables from Weyl operators on local algebras of free QFT — exploiting the type III₁ structure of the algebra and the modular-conjugation map between complementary wedges. The same algebraic type appears on the boundary of a holographic CFT in the large- limit: the algebra of single-trace operators on a boundary subregion is type III₁ (large-n-factorization, type-iii-von-neumann-algebras). It is therefore natural to ask whether the Bell-CHSH program’s tools apply to boundary subalgebras of holographic CFTs, and what — if anything — Bell-CHSH measurements would say about bulk spacetime structure.
Evidence
- Both settings live on type III₁ factors; the modular conjugation is defined in both cases and acts between commuting subalgebras (Haag duality in flat space; subregion-subalgebra duality in AdS/CFT — see subregion-subalgebra-duality).
- Liu’s 2025 review explicitly poses the question of how flat-space algebraic-QFT methods translate to the holographic setting.
- The existing wiki question bell-chsh-in-holographic-setting frames the same direction from the Bell side.
Gaps
- No explicit Weyl-operator construction is available for boundary subalgebras of strongly-coupled holographic CFTs. The Weyl algebra requires a Gaussian structure (free or generalized-free fields); at strong coupling, only the large- generalized-free-field limit provides one.
- Even in the large- limit, the relation between a Bell-CHSH violation on the boundary and a geometric quantity in the bulk is unclear. Does the Tsirelson bound translate to a bulk inequality?
- Subleading-in- corrections may be crucial for any operational interpretation, and these are not under analytic control.
Potential Projects
- A first calculation: Bell-CHSH violation for a pair of intervals in a 2d holographic CFT at large central charge, using the generalized-free-field structure. The bulk dual would be a pair of strips in with their RT surfaces; compare the CHSH value to a geometric invariant of the RT configuration.
- Compute the Bell-CHSH violation across a holographic CFT thermofield-double state (AQFT Sem II Wk 8 already covers Bell-CHSH on TFD in flat space — extend to holographic TFD = eternal AdS-Schwarzschild).
