Definition
In a or gauge theory at large , single-trace operators behave as generalized free fields: higher correlators factorize as if the operators were Gaussian random variables at leading order, with corrections. The algebra of single-trace operators on a boundary subregion of a holographic CFT becomes type III₁ in the limit — the algebraic signature of emergent semiclassical bulk geometry.
Role in Research
Large- factorization is covered in Lecture 14 of the holography course, and its algebraic consequences in Lecture 29. It also appears in the AQFT course’s holography-large-n-primer §E.2, which discusses how the limit drives the type I type III₁ transition in the boundary algebra. This concept bridges the ‘t Hooft counting of Feynman diagrams (planar dominance) to the algebraic structure exploited in subregion-subalgebra-duality.
Relations
- type-iii-von-neumann-algebras — large- limit drives the boundary algebra to type III₁.
- holographic-dictionary — is the expansion parameter on both sides of the dictionary.
- subregion-subalgebra-duality — the type III₁ structure of boundary subalgebras follows from large- factorization.
