Mini-Lecture V.4: Liouville Term and Scale Cancellation
We study variation of the Liouville action after scale cancellation. The worked calculation and its limitations are the classroom target; the longer source reconstruction supports independent study.
How to use this lecture
Prerequisites: V.3 and IV.2; the variational-calculus bridge. Review the relevant prerequisite bridge before starting.
- Classroom core, 90 minutes: question and prerequisites (10); variation of the Liouville action after scale cancellation (25); worked calculation or laboratory (30); problems 1–2 (20); written exit check (5).
- Self-study, approximately 2–3 hours: reconstruct the algebra in the main text, work through the laboratory, then solve problems 1–3 before reading the answer checkpoints. The estimate is provisional.
- Research extension: problem 4 states the source-dependent task and what counts as completion. Its open claims are not assumed in the classroom assessment.
The classroom result is the explicitly calculated model or conditional derivation below. Retained sections marked Source reconstruction explain the IAS argument and identify provenance; that label does not certify the argument. The claim map records the research limits. The literal extended-surface identity fails the circle check in III.5; geometric QCD conclusions depending on it remain conditional.

The Question
Why does a Liouville-type term appear, and how does it cancel?
Notation
- : the twistor measure factor (V.3).
- : the momentum-inversion factor (V.3).
- : the scale-invariant phase-space volume element.
- : the effective Liouville action (eq (131)).
- : the string tension.
- : the quark mass.
- WZW: Wess-Zumino-Witten (topological term in Witten’s twistor string).
- Penrose Non-Linear Graviton: a construction where spacetime geometry is encoded in twistor data.
Derivation
Step 1 — The exact scale cancellation (p123)
The twistor measure gives (V.3: ). The momentum inversion gives (V.3: ). Their product (p123):
These two local homogeneity factors cancel. A constant Jacobian factor remains in V.3. The source interprets this as scale independence of its reduced local measure; the statement does not establish cancellation of every functional determinant, regulator term, or anomaly.
What is being used: the computation of V.3. Status: Source reconstruction.
Step 2 — The effective Liouville action (p124, eq (131))
The effective action reduces to a Liouville-type term (p124, eq (131)):
Read the three terms:
- : the Liouville kinetic energy (the conformal anomaly contribution — the same term that appeared in IV.2 as the Liouville action).
- : the string tension (the area element in the conformal gauge — is the square root of the metric determinant when ).
- : the quark mass (the mass density on the boundary — is the proper mass density).
The displayed action contains both a two-dimensional bulk field and a boundary term. The source intends the bulk geometry to be induced from boundary data. Reducing it to an action of boundary variables alone requires solving that extension problem; it is not accomplished by renaming the bulk field a boundary field.
Step 3 — Twistor holography vs. topological twistor string (p124)
The source proposes to reconstruct its surface from boundary spinor data. That is the intended use of “twistor holography” here; it is not an established equivalence with AdS/CFT.
Witten’s 2003 twistor-string proposal concerns a topological B-model on supertwistor space and its relation to perturbative gauge-theory amplitudes. Calling it simply a topological WZW action is inaccurate. The systems have different variables, observables, and proposed regimes. See the primary Witten reference in the bibliography.
Worked laboratory: bulk and boundary Euler equations
Fix and . For a real field, . Write the source model as
where is the reference boundary measure. Varying and integrating by parts gives the bulk equation
If boundary values are free, the boundary equation is
With fixed Dirichlet data, at the boundary and this latter equation is not imposed. A constant is not a bulk solution for positive . Thus cancellation of the local measure weight does not eliminate the radial dynamics.
There is also a global check. Under a free constant variation , the kinetic term is unchanged and
for a regular finite real field and positive . Thus this model has no unconstrained real stationary point with fully free boundary values. Fixed boundary data, constraints, or a justified complex continuation change the variational problem and must be stated before discussing a saddle.
These equations and the constant-variation check are exact for the stated model and reference measure. They do not verify that this action follows from the full regulated QCD construction.
What Was Proved, What Was Assumed
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| — the scale cancellation | Source reconstruction |
| The effective volume element is scale-invariant | Source reconstruction |
| The effective action is a Liouville-type term (eq (131)) | Source reconstruction |
| Twistor holography: 4D bulk projected onto 1D boundary, no fluctuating metric | Source reconstruction / interpretive |
| Distinct from AdS/CFT (no bulk gravity) and from Witten’s twistor string (not WZW) | interpretive |
Common Traps
- Reading the scale cancellation as “the Liouville field is irrelevant.” The two displayed local measure factors cancel, but the action still depends on (eq (131)): the kinetic term , the string tension , and the mass . It does not establish a statement about the full counting of states.
- Conflating twistor holography with AdS/CFT. In AdS/CFT, the bulk is a gravitational theory (fluctuating metric). Here, the bulk is rigid (no fluctuating metric) — the 4D geometry is fixed by the Hodge-dual surface. The “holography” is the projection of bulk dynamics onto the 1D boundary, not a gravity/gauge duality.

-
Completion: state what is held fixed, derive the appropriate boundary variation, and translate all complex-coordinate measure factors before comparing coefficients.
Teaching note
Use the decisive step in problem 2 as the written exit check for V.4; assign problem 3 only after students have named the assumptions. Grade the research extension by its documented method and justified conclusion, including an unresolved result when evidence is missing. The timing above awaits classroom rehearsal.
