The physical question

Gravity amplifies density variations, but it needs something to amplify. Temperature and polarization variations in the cosmic microwave background carry information about an earlier distribution of perturbations. Their correlations are close to scale invariant: after a suitable dimensionless normalization, fluctuations have similar power across a wide range of wavelengths. They are also close to Gaussian, meaning that a two-point correlation function describes much of their statistical content. [14]

The problem is to explain their amplitude, correlations, and coherent evolution, together with the background in which they formed. Inflation proposes an early period of accelerated expansion during which quantum fluctuations were stretched to large physical wavelengths. Competing scenarios generate perturbations during contraction or other nonstandard histories. Agreement with the power spectrum is a necessary test, not sufficient identification of a history.

What is known, and what is open

Simple inflationary models account economically for several properties of observed perturbations. The field driving inflation, its potential, the onset of the phase, and its conversion into a hot plasma remain undetermined. That conversion is called reheating. Its details affect the relation between an observed wavelength and the earlier dynamics that produced it.

Primordial gravitational waves would provide another observable. They must be separated from gravitational lensing and Galactic foregrounds in microwave polarization. The cited BICEP/Keck analysis supplies a dated upper limit, not a detection and not a claim to be the newest limit. Absence of a detectable tensor signal does not exclude all inflation. [15]

The origin of a classical-looking perturbation distribution is also conceptually distinct from calculating a quantum two-point function. Squeezing and decoherence explain aspects of this transition; whether they settle the measurement problem depends on the account of outcomes. See QM.

Build the minimum theory

Inflation can be defined by $\ddot a>0$, or equivalently a decreasing comoving Hubble length $(aH)^{-1}$. The Hubble length is a useful dynamical scale, not generally identical to a causal horizon. A mode labelled by comoving wave number $k$ has physical wave number $k/a$. It can begin with $k/a\gg H$ and later satisfy $k/a\ll H$.

For a canonical, minimally coupled inflaton in a slowly evolving background, introduce the curvature perturbation $\zeta$, a dimensionless measure of spatial curvature fluctuations on a specified slicing. Its nearly scale-invariant dimensionless power is approximately

$$\mathcal P_\zeta(k)\simeq\frac{H^2}{8\pi^2\epsilon M_{\rm P}^2}\bigg|_{k=aH},\qquad \epsilon=-\frac{\dot H}{H^2}.$$

Here $M_{\rm P}$ is the reduced Planck mass, and $\epsilon$ quantifies departure from constant expansion rate. The relation assumes single-field slow-roll evolution, an appropriate vacuum-like initial state, and the usual gravitational dynamics. It is not a universal relation between any primordial spectrum and an expansion rate.

Worked example: why a mode stops oscillating

Take a massless, minimally coupled test scalar in exact de Sitter expansion, without allowing it to change the geometry. In conformal time $\eta$, defined by $d\eta=dt/a$, write $a=-1/(H\eta)$ and $v_k=a\phi_k$. A prime denotes $d/d\eta$. The mode equation is

$$v_k''+\left(k^2-\frac{a''}{a}\right)v_k=0,\qquad \frac{a''}{a}=\frac2{\eta^2}.$$

The solution approaching a positive-frequency vacuum wave far inside the Hubble scale is

$$v_k=\frac{e^{-ik\eta}}{\sqrt{2k}}\left(1-\frac{i}{k\eta}\right).$$

For $|k\eta|\gg1$ it oscillates as an ordinary oscillator. For $|k\eta|\ll1$, its growing magnitude cancels the scale factor in $\phi_k=v_k/a$, giving $|\phi_k|\to H/\sqrt{2k^3}$. Therefore the power per logarithmic interval,

$$\mathcal P_\phi=\frac{k^3|\phi_k|^2}{2\pi^2}\to\left(\frac{H}{2\pi}\right)^2,$$

is independent of $k$. This explains a mechanism for scale invariance through stretching. It does not yet derive the inflaton curvature spectrum: exact de Sitter has $\epsilon=0$, so inserting it into the slow-roll curvature formula is invalid. A finite wavelength band avoids treating the massless field's infrared behavior as innocuous.

Insight. The simple mode calculation explains a shape. Its normalization as a density perturbation, survival through reheating, and discrimination from alternative histories are additional steps.

Questions to investigate

Calibration questions have established answers. Diagnostics ask what follows inside a specified model or comparison. Extensions are bounded proposals whose novelty and feasibility need a focused literature check. Each answer should record its assumptions and limits.

IN-1 · The origin of cosmic structureCalibration

Can you derive freezing without a horizon-crossing slogan?

Do: Differentiate the mode solution and verify its equation. Plot the physical amplitude as a function of $|k\eta|$.

Check: Recover the short-wavelength vacuum normalization and long-wavelength constant amplitude. Keep the test-field and exact-de-Sitter assumptions visible.

Meaning: Turns an often-used verbal mechanism into a controlled calculation.

IN-2 · The origin of cosmic structureCalibration

Does the same scalar amplitude fix the inflationary scale?

Do: Hold $\mathcal P_\zeta$ fixed while varying $H$ and $\epsilon$ within slow roll. In the same canonical setup use the tensor ratio $r\simeq16\epsilon$.

Check: Verify that many pairs give the same scalar amplitude but different tensor power. The tensor relation inherits the model assumptions.

Meaning: Identifies what a second observable adds and what an upper limit leaves degenerate.

IN-3 · The origin of cosmic structureDiagnostic

What does a third-point correlation test that the power spectrum cannot?

Do: Follow the squeezed limit, with one wavelength much longer than the others, in Maldacena's single-field relation. Explain its connection to a long mode acting as a rescaling.

Check: List the attractor, initial-state, and single-clock assumptions; an attractor erases dependence on an independent background velocity.

Meaning: A failure can reject that class of models, not automatically all inflation. [16]

IN-4 · The origin of cosmic structureDiagnostic

How much does reheating move an inferred potential?

Do: Choose one inflationary potential and two constant effective reheating equations of state. Track the same observed mode back to its exit time.

Check: Conserve energy in each phase and require a hot radiation era compatible with light-element production.

Meaning: Produces an uncertainty band tied to an unknown history, instead of a falsely unique reconstructed potential.

IN-5 · The origin of cosmic structureExtension

Which feature survives imperfect knowledge of the initial state?

Do: In the test-field model, mix positive and negative frequency solutions with explicitly normalized coefficients over a finite band. Track changes in two-point and selected higher correlations after adding a specified interaction.

Check: Bound the excitation energy so the test-field approximation survives, and recover the vacuum limit.

Meaning: A finite, testable robustness question; compare existing excited-initial-state studies before interpreting novelty.

First investigation and its stopping point

Begin with IN-1 and IN-2. The goal is to explain the production mechanism and its degeneracy. A claim about the beginning of the universe requires considerably more than a successful calculation over the observable band.
